This 12-week course covers all elements of music theory set out in the Model Music Curriculum for KS2. The course includes aural elements throughout, and encourages students to play simple melodies on a keyboard (which can be on a tablet).
The 12 sessions develop in complexity so as to build on previous knowledge.
Sessions 1-3 cover pitch, including recognition of ascending and descending pitch, a conceptual understanding of reading notes on a stave, keyboard geography and accidentals.
Sessions 4-6 cover pulse, rhythm and time signatures.
Session 7 is a round-up of the first half of the course, testing all elements of pitch and rhythm.
Sessions 8 and 9 cover major, minor and pentatonic scales, and in particular C and G major and A minor.
Session 10 explains triad chords, and how to harmonise a melody using chords I, IV and V.
Session 11 covers dynamic, tempo and articulation terms and signs.
Session 12 brings all of the previously-taught elements together for a final mission.
The course includes an introductory plenary video for each session, an information sheet for students to refer to throughout their mission, 10 sets of printed tasks, a revision quiz for each prior session, and optional follow-up activities to cement understanding of the concepts. Teacher notes set out the answers to each activity, an explanation of the learning purpose of each task, and a glossary of the terms used.
